ASPR Foal Futurity Winners

As a sample of coast-to-coast and cross-country breeding, Sport Pony Magazine presents the American Sport Pony Registry's Foal Futurity Winners for 2004. They represent a wide range of breeding, including Welsh, Arabian, Warmblood, and New Forest Pony among others. The West Coast remains a pony-breeding hot-spot, with the Canadian Champion and Reservce Champion coming from BC and the US Champion from California. Photos and foal profiles have been provided by the owners.

*Note: The ASPR has a limit on how many letters are allowed in a horse's registered name; if horses have a different name under the Welsh registry this has been identified also.

Xquisite 2004 filly 7.5
Xceptshan ox x Shades Of Spring
Breeder/Owner Vivanne Macdonald, Arthur ON

"Xquisite is a 3/4 Arabian filly by Xceptshahn (Bey Shah X RSD Khaptivation) and out of Shades of Spring (Shannazon X Shades of Summer). The dark bay filly is double registered ASPR and Half-Arabian and is entered into the
Arabian Sweepstakes program.

"Xquisite (aka Luna) was inspected at the April ASPR inspection in Ontario at three weeks of age. Both she and her dam went First Premimum at the first inspection in Ontario/Canada East. Scoring a 7.5 with comments like 'Cute Factor' and 'Very Appealing Filly', Luna captured the attention of everyone at the inspection. She took to the travelling and showring like she had been born to it, never putting a foot wrong and leading around perfectly.

"Her dam, Shades of Spring, is due in May to the imported Welsh Sect B stallion *Stockham Commander M, owned by Morton Stables, Sharon, Ontario. Both stallion and foal will be APSR inspected in 2005."

Sport Pony Magazine profiled Xquisite's dam,
Shades of Spring
, in our July/August 2004 issue.

Wicked Storm 2004 Colt 7.7
Wicked Courtjester/Shadow
Owner/Breeder: Stuart E Leland, New Hope PA

"Shadow came to us by chance through a rescue group. We were looking for a kind and bomb-proof large pony to teach our son about horses. When I first laid eyes on her I sensed she had potential. She has a beautiful head, neck and topline with a kind eye. She was smart and willing but not the best mover. I hoped to build upon her body-type by picking a sire with substantial leg bone, a strong hind-end and with exceptional movement.

"After doing a national search on the web, we saw a picture of Wicked Courtjester and contacted his owner Lesley Feakins. When we met him, he was so regal looking and fit. Lesley let him loose in the arena and he jumped 2'6" and then, taking two strides in the three, sailed over the 3'. When we raised the jumps he cleared them with ease. I’d never seen an athlete with such a joyous approach to work. His positive, take-no-prisoner but do-it-with-a-smile attitude was a winning combination. When Lesley allowed my then-5-year-old son to enter Wicked’s stall unattended, I knew we had a good match.

"Lesley introduced us to the world of the American Sport Pony, and ASPR allowed us to have the foal inspected as long as we agreed to have the mare inspected at the same time. At the inspection, we met many wonderful and supportive people and the judges were very informative. They affirmed what I always felt about Shadow, giving her high marks (an 8 for type with an overall score of 7.5). Of course, the biggest thrill came when they announced Stormy as the site champion in the pony division. What a thrill all of this has been for us and we look forward to meeting new friends and having more adventures in the future."
