must be completed for clinic registration.
Qualification for WPCSC Judges' Card
These clinics are being held for the benefit of anyone wishing to
learn more about ponies: what to look for if you are a breeder,
exhibitor, judge, trainer, purchaser or just interested in ponies
in general. A show is being held along with the clinic to allow
learner judges to get experience for the Welsh judging cards, but
there is no entry fee for the show. Please be sure to check the
appropriate box on the entry form if you are interested in being
a learner judge.
The show/clinic(s) are being held indoors are the Okotoks Hebson
Arena so weather will not be a problem. There will be a concession.
Stabling will be available. Show begins at 9 a.m. Each Section plus
Sport Ponies will be judged and reviewed by itself. People are welcomed
and encouraged to offer to bring animals. The ponies you would like
to bring do not necessarily need to be show ponies. A limited number
of ponies will be selected by a random draw. These ponies will be
judged and evaluated. Mares and foals are welcome, as a lot of people
would like to know what they should be looking for in a foal. If
you are a learner judge, we can arrange for experienced people to
handle your animal if need be.
Judging Clinic - Judging clinic topics will cover:
the difference in the Sections for type, i.e. why should a Section
B look different than Mountain Ponies or Cobs? What is the difference
between Section C and Section D? What is the difference, if any,
in the way the ponies should move? What should people be looking
for in Sport Ponies? Balance and conformation will also be covered.
We are hoping to have at least 3 - 6 ponies of each section. Sport
ponies will have two divisions, 13.2 and under and over 13.2 hands.
Presentation & Turnout Clinic - The presentation and
turnout (clinic only) will take part after lunch. For the turnout
part we would like clean ponies that haven’t been trimmed
or clipped but are used to having these things done to them. The
judges will then show us how to turn them out to their best advantage.
If you wish to bring a pony for this you will need to contact Pat
(403) 934-3666 before hand as we will only be taking one or two
ponies per Section. Then the morning ponies can come forward again
for the handlers to be encouraged on presenting them to the judges.
This part should be of great value to those who feel they need more
help in showing their ponies. Juniors are more than welcome to attend
with an adult.
On Sunday, Welsh Pony & Cob Society of Alberta members plus
paid up Alberta Sport Pony members are welcome to attend a picnic/BBQ
at Kobur Welsh, Okotoks to visit further with Mr. Partridge and
Mr. Prosser. Membership forms for both of these clubs are enclosed.
Non-members are welcome for a meal cost of $10.00.
Note: Registrations for learner judges are limited
on a first registration basis.
Cost: Pre-registration for the Judging Clinic is $25.00,
$35.00 on the day. Presentation and Turnout Clinic is $10.00 per
individual. This will be a valuable experience for anyone interested
in judging, showing, purchasing or breeding ponies. Juniors are
most welcome.

Our Judges
Les Partridge has been breeding ponies under the
"Rosedale" prefix for 40+ years. Les is a lifetime member
of the Welsh Pony & Cob Society and has been a panel judge now
for 30 years. He is also on other major judging panels and is frequently
asked to officiate as well as giving talks and clinics on "show
production."
His main interest is with the Welsh Section B, but he also breeds
a few Section A's and Welsh part-breds. He breeds, produces and
shows horses and ponies to a high level, and ponies bred at "Rosedale"
are seen frequently at shows collecting the prizes! Over the years
he has judged all over the world including Canada and the USA and
last year enjoyed judging 3 shows in various parts of Australia.
Edwin Prosser has been breeding ponies for many
years and is a lifetime member of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society.
He breeds and shows Welsh ponies under the "Mintfield"
prefix and also produced and showed ponies for the late Mrs. Pat
Johns-Powell of the Cottrell stud. He now breeds and shows for himself
and in 2004 was Supreme in Show at the Royal Welsh with his brood
mare.
He also has judged in other countries and last year accompanied
Les to Australia and judged there with him. He is well known and
popular with other Welsh exhibitors for his honesty, integrity and
knowledge.
NOTE - Qualifications
for Judges Cards
Saturday morning will be actually two shows as well as a clinic.
This will help those who wish to gain learner judge experience and
spectators will have the benefit of the judges’ evaluations.
Each learner judge will have 2 minutes to evaluate each pony and
then will be expected to openly discuss his or her decisions. The
judges will then make their comments as to how they have placed
the class. Discussion will be welcome from everyone in attendance
within the time frame allotted. Each learner judge will receive
two certificates from The Welsh Pony & Cob Society of Alberta
signed by the judges stating the person has judged under them.
These clinics will count towards receiving judges cards from the
Welsh Pony & Cob Society of Canada as per their judges' program.
Attached is approval received from the President Ms. Jessie James.
"If it is a double judged show (or one judge, for that matter)
it would count as long as there are enough ponies in the classes
and the judge(s) are qualified. The ones booked obviously are. If
only some classes have enough ponies, the learner judges can pick
up whichever classes qualify and get the rest at other shows. They
need to have at least three ponies in the class, not combined Sections."
Welsh Pony & Cob Association of
Canada Proposed National Points System
After much discussion from the directors, we have decided to form
a members committee to present a reasonable point tracking system/award
system at the next WPCSC AGM. This will be a work in progress
for at least a couple of years, but hopefully there is enough interest
to get something off the ground and implemented for 2006.
First it needs to be a Canada-wide system, affordable and reasonably
simple. If you or anyone you know would be interested in contributing
ideas/help please contact me asap! Also looking for input
on how other societies/groups have their systems.
