Spruce Meadows No. 1 in the World
Spruce Meadows has again been recognized by the Fédération
Equestre Internationale (FEI) as #1 in the world for the sport of
show jumping. The FEI noted the highest standards of competition
and the excellent quality of the facilities at Spruce Meadows as
major contributing factors when considering the recipient for this
prestigious award. Spruce Meadows was advised of the Award by the
FEI which will be officially presented at a ceremony in Maastricht,
the Netherlands early in December.
“All of us at Spruce Meadows are both honoured and thrilled
that the FEI has once again recognized Spruce Meadows for our contribution
to international sport,” says Linda Southern-Heathcott, executive
vice-president. “The FEI recognition is a testament to the
world leading commitment and effort of our sponsors, volunteers,
athletes, officials, media and fans who have been an integral part
of the Spruce Meadows story over the last 29 years.”
“For the City of Calgary, the Province of Alberta and for
Canada, it is also a truly significant tourism destination achievement.”
In 2004 the FEI officially sanctioned over 500 international tournaments
on six continents, including Championships and the equestrian events
at the Athens Olympics. Spruce Meadows hosted a total of five international
tournaments in 2004 that offered over $5,000,000 in prize money,
attracted athletes from 20 nations, 400,000 fans and were broadcast
to 100 countries.
“We now have great tradition and stability at Spruce Meadows
which will provide a wonderful foundation going forward for our
30th Anniversary Season and beyond,” added Southern-Heathcott.
“To be considered ‘the best’ by our sport’s
governing body is an inspiration for all of us to continue with
the same heart and mind that have elevated Spruce Meadows to the
position it enjoys on the world’s sport stage.”
2004 marks the second time that Spruce Meadows has been ranked #1
by the FEI. The Award is presented bi-annually. Spruce Meadows first
won the Award in 2002.
