Games on Horseback

Games on Horseback

Most riders who grew up playing games on horseback would agree that games are an essential part of a well-rounded riding education – besides that, they're a lot of fun! While most games in Games on Horseback will be familiar to any seasoned Pony Clubber, the authors do cover a broad cross-section, including jumping, distance, driving, and roping games. The book is predominantly focused towards English riders but, with the exception of the jumping games, most can be adapted for Western riders as well.

Author Betty Bennett-Talbot is founder of the Horsemanship Safety Association. Instructions for the games are given with appropriate safety precautions, and being safe needn’t stop anyone from having fun or challenging their skills.

Games range from mounted exercises with the horse standing still, to races, jumping, roping and polo-type games. Each one is identified as being for beginner, intermediate, or advanced riders, with instructions, cautions, and variations to make the game more (or less) challenging. Each game has a double-page spread complete with color photos and line drawings as needed.

Though most experienced riders won't find many new ideas, Games on Horseback is an adequate reference for anyone wanting ideas for mounted games.
