Ian Millar Named Jump Canada Athlete of the Month for March

Ottawa, Ontario --- Seven-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar has added the Jump Canada Athlete of the Month, presented by ProChaps, award to the countless accomplishments in his career as the most successful competitor in the history of Canadian show jumping.

Millar, 57, of Perth, ON, began his March winning streak aboard Promise Me, ten-year-old chestnut Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Millar Brooke Farms, at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club, site of the prestigious CSIO**** United States Cosequin Finale, held from March 10-14 in Wellington, FL.

Millar was named as a member of the Canadian Show Jumping Team for the $50,000 Samsung Nations’ Cup, Presented by CN. Acting as the anchor rider as the fourth and final rider in the rotation, Millar secured the victory for Canada by producing a flawless effort in the second round. The win in the prestigious competition marked the first Nations’ Cup victory for Canada since 1999.

Two days later, Millar and Promise Me were one of only three horse-rider combinations to advance to the jump-off in the $100,000 U.S. Open Jumper Championship. Facing stiff international competition, Millar and Promise Me enjoyed a second place finish.

To end the month, Millar traveled to the Tampa Bay Classic, held March 24 to 28 at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Centre, in Tampa, FL, where he rode Sweet Dreams, a 13-year-old bay selle francais gelding owned by Scotia Farms, captured the victory in the $2,500 1.35m class followed by a second place finish in the $5,000 1.40m Acorn Hill Farm Challenge.

It is no surprise that Millar, an eight-time Canadian Show Jumping Champion, was chosen Jump Canada Athlete of the Month for March. With over 100 Nations’ Cup appearances, Millar has ridden in more team competitions than any other Canadian rider and holds the North American record for grand prix and derby wins with more than 150. Millar experienced his greatest success partnered with Big Ben, who retired in 1994 after 11 seasons on the international circuit.

In recognition of his achievement, Millar will receive a pair of riding chaps, compliments of ProChaps. A Canadian manufacturer of high-performance riding chaps, ProChaps is the proud sponsor of the Jump Canada ‘Athlete of the Month’ program and rewards each selected rider with a brand-new custom pair of its groundbreaking chaps.
