July 30, 2004 -- Alberta's first-ever Equestrian
Games, originally set for this fall, has been rescheduled to celebrate
the province's 100th Anniversary.
"The Alberta Equestrian Federation board held a meeting to
discuss the games. There was a consensus through the room that we
would do better with a scaled-down version for this year, followed
with a major event next August," says Games Chairman Gerald
Maitland-Smith.
"This is great news on two fronts. First of all, it allows
us to tie our first-ever Alberta Equestrian Games with the province's
100th anniversary. Secondly, we will still be able to host some
of the events as originally planned, so many of the riders and drivers
who had set their schedules around the AEG will still have an opportunity
to compete."
As an alternative for 2004, the Alberta Equestrian Federation is
offering a "Mini-Games" during the weekend of Sept. 18-20
at Rocky Mountain House.
Events to be featured during the "2004 Mini-Games" include:
Competitive Trail, Combined Driving, Endurance, 4-H Competitions,
and Vaulting. AEF President Patricia Thomson said members of the
board are grateful to the Maitland-Smiths, who have generously offered
the use of their facility, Cromdale Stables, as an alternative venue
for the Mini-Games.
Details of each of the events will be handled by their provincial
organizations, including Trail Riding Alberta Conference, Alberta
Carriage Driving Association, Endurance Riders of Alberta, Alberta
4-H and the Alberta Equestrian Vaulting Association.

Following
the format used by the World Equestrian Games, which profiles seven
equestrian sports, the Alberta Equestrian games will profile ten
sports, expanding the western and recreational aspects of riding.
The following competitions are offered to both junior and senior
riders: Dressage (Level 2 to Grand Prix), Show Jumping and Hunter
Over Fences (first rounds 3'6"), Equestrian Vaulting (Men's
and Women's Individuals and Pairs), Reining (Youth to Open), Combined
Training (Pre-training to Prelim), Endurance and Competitive Trail
Ride (25 and 50 mile), Arena Trail Horse (Open), and Combined Training
(Training and up). Entries will be limited to 80 horses per sport,
and all competitors are eligible for individual and team prizes,
with teams being drawn up and posted by the show committee.
The
show also includes demonstration sports, a trade fair, Rare Breeds
of Canada exhibit, and a gala "Festival of the Horse"
on Friday evening. Potential entrants must have shown in their discipline
in 2003 or 2004, and must be members in good standing of the AEF.
The AEG is a primary show and prize money will be offered.
The
Alberta Equestrian Games is the first of its kind in Canada. The
event will bring over 650 equestrian athletes to Red Deer to compete
in both team and individual competition. For more information,
